Wishing a Speedy Recovery Fans Rally Together in Support of Daniel Ricciardo After Painful Update

When Daniel Ricciardo joined McLaren in 2021, his once-joyful demeanor took a hit. Two seasons at McLaren brought with them two years of underwhelming performances and occasional successes. It's safe to say that his time there did not align with his career aspirations. To illustrate just how dissatisfied he had been in recent years, Ricciardo recently underwent surgery on his left hand, and surprisingly, he appears happier now than during his McLaren stint. But what prompted this surgery?

Ricciardo's tenure at McLaren left him with emotional and mental scars. Interestingly, the physical scar on his left hand is also connected to his McLaren seat – specifically, it was caused by Oscar Piastri, the driver who succeeded him at McLaren.

When Formula 1 resumed after the summer hiatus, Ricciardo was brimming with enthusiasm, ready to deliver his best in the season's latter half, having dedicated time to self-improvement during the break. However, Circuit Zandvoort had a different script in mind. During Friday's Free Practice 2 session, Piastri had an unfortunate collision with the wall at Turn 3. Following closely behind on a fast lap, Ricciardo couldn't react in time to avoid the McLaren and, regrettably, ended up crashing into the same wall.

The abrupt movements of the steering wheel resulted in a fractured metacarpal bone in his left hand, forcing him to withdraw from the weekend's remaining events. Subsequent medical scans revealed that returning to his AlphaTauri car within just a few weeks was not feasible. Hence, the decision to undergo surgery.

Although the surgical procedure took place immediately after the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, it wasn't until yesterday that he shared an update on Instagram after the operation, including a close-up image of the stitches on his hand. Alongside the somewhat graphic picture, he wrote, "Status relatively unchanged." Sky Sports F1's Twitter account shared the photo, commenting with a sympathetic "Ouch." Given Ricciardo's upbeat personality and the widespread affection he enjoys among Formula 1 fans, Twitter users united to send him messages wishing for a swift recovery.
