Lawson's Victory Over Tsunoda Leaves Him Unsatisfied

Liam Lawson, a Kiwi driver, expressed a lack of "satisfaction" in beating Yuki Tsunoda in Japan, especially since he missed out on securing a 2024 AlphaTauri seat.

Lawson continued to impress as a super-substitute for the injured Daniel Ricciardo at Suzuka, marking his third race since stepping into the seat. He finished in 11th place, one spot ahead of Tsunoda, despite Tsunoda besting him in Q3 qualifying.

During the race, Lawson displayed determination as he raced wheel-to-wheel with his more experienced teammate from turn one, through the challenging Esses, and all the way to the Degner two, where the younger driver prevailed on the inside. This move proved crucial as Lawson crossed the finish line just 0.8 seconds ahead of Tsunoda after 52 laps of racing.

However, the announcement by AlphaTauri that they would retain Tsunoda and Ricciardo for the 2024 season, with Lawson as a reserve, left the Kiwi driver with little reason to celebrate.

When asked if he was happy to beat Tsunoda, Lawson replied, "No satisfaction. I want to be in the seat, and I don't have one right now. So, it's basically about doing the best job I can each time I get in the car, and I'll keep doing that for as long as I am driving."

Regarding the race itself, Lawson believed he extracted the maximum performance from the AT04. He was the last car to be lapped by race winner Max Verstappen, with his closest competitors being Alpine's Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly.

However, Lawson acknowledged that the Alpines were well ahead of AlphaTauri, which lacked the necessary speed. He fell 21 seconds short of earning points at the checkered flag.

"We didn't quite have the speed (on Sunday)," Lawson stated. "I think that when all the teams finish and there are no retirements, to be honest, the only guys we were really racing were potentially the Alpines, and they were too quick. It meant that we were just outside the points unfortunately, so I feel like we pretty much maximized."

Lawson described the battle with Tsunoda as "aggressive" but fair and felt that he had "proved" himself at Suzuka. He emphasized his commitment to scoring points for the team and showcasing his abilities each time he gets behind the wheel.

Lawson is poised to compete in a fourth race for AlphaTauri, with Ricciardo still in the process of recovering, at the upcoming race in Qatar on October 6-8.
