Is This the Hidden Ace Up Red Bull's Sleeve for 2024
Red Bull Unveils a Unique Rear Wing Development for the Singapore Grand Prix. Is This Integral to Their 2024 Car Advancements?
Despite Red Bull's commanding lead in both the Formula 1 Drivers' and Constructors' Championships, development efforts for their dominant RB19 continue unabated. Contrary to what some media outlets have asserted, the recent updates introduced in Singapore are not the final modifications we can expect to see on this particular race car.
Visually, these updates may not appear significant, but insider information suggests they involve a different configuration of the Venturi channels beneath the car's floor, in conjunction with high downforce wing variants. While these changes may potentially lead to a reduction in top speeds, they could serve as a preview of solutions that will be implemented on the RB20 in the forthcoming year.
The choice of a high downforce track for these updates is strategic because it's widely recognized that the most significant effects of the Drag Reduction System (DRS) are achieved when the wing flap's angle of attack is greater.
Singapore, the Ideal Test Track
Singapore's circuit perfectly suits the RB19's Drag Reduction System (DRS), demonstrating its full potential.
Adrian Newey and his team are proactively seeking effective solutions, fully aware that their competitors will aim to replicate the RB19's DRS effect in their own vehicles.
Thus far, the combination of the floor design with the beam wing has significantly amplified the DRS effect on the RB19. Once this design path is fully explored, the new floor design would enable a further enhancement of the diffuser's stall, achieving even higher airflow rates while preserving the fundamental principle.
In practical terms, by altering the Venturi channels' configuration, a different approach to managing the exhaust flow would be achieved. This adjustment would amplify the DRS's impact without necessitating any changes to the external aerodynamic elements.
For rival teams, this signifies that their attempts to emulate Red Bull's solution would once again lead them to delve into the concealed sections and intricate Venturi channels, which are not easily replicable.
This development indicates that Red Bull's technical strategy for the upcoming season is becoming clear: maintaining a technical edge over their direct competitors.
