Former NASCAR Driver Austin Theriault Competing in Prominent U.S. House Race in Maine

Former NASCAR driver turned politician, Austin Theriault, declared his entry into the Republican primary race with the aim of challenging Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Golden in what is anticipated to be one of the nation's most fiercely contested House races in 2024.

Theriault, who made his announcement on various radio programs, emphasized his determination to address critical issues such as inflation, illegal border crossings, and the decline of small towns. He expressed concern that hardworking individuals in Maine are facing challenges due to the influence of out-of-state elites who are disconnected from the realities of making a living in the state.

The 29-year-old freshman state legislator from Fort Kent formally submitted his paperwork to join the primary contest, alongside contenders like mortgage broker Robert Cross from Dedham and fellow first-term legislator Michael Soboleski from Phillips.

Savannah Viar of the National Republican Congressional Committee stated that Theriault would be a formidable candidate in what is expected to be a highly competitive House race nationally. Theriault has engaged in discussions with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the chair of the NRCC, although the committee typically refrains from intervening in primary elections.

In response to the primary field, Jared Golden expressed that he is not currently preoccupied with the individual race, as the primary is over eight months away. He emphasized his focus on family and the work he has been elected to do on behalf of the people of Maine's Second District.

The 2nd Congressional District, known for its rural and expansive geography, has gained attention as it has evolved into a conservative stronghold within liberal New England. In 2020, former President Donald Trump won the district, securing an electoral vote for Maine.

Golden has secured victory three times, including two wins against former GOP Rep. Bruce Poliquin, thanks to the ranked voting system. This voting method is designed to ensure that the winner garners a majority of the vote by allowing multiple rounds of voting in which lower-ranked candidates are eliminated, and their votes are redistributed. The system was upheld in federal court following a legal challenge by Poliquin after his defeat in 2018.

Austin Theriault is not the only race car driver to venture into politics in New England. Vermont Republican Governor Phil Scott has long been a fixture at the Thunder Road track, although his racing career did not reach the same heights as Theriault's. Theriault began his career at a local speedway and climbed the ranks to NASCAR's top tier before suffering an injury in a crash during a 2019 race at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. Since then, he has shifted away from driving and now offers consulting and mentoring to other drivers.
