Fernando Alonso Receives a Reminder of His 'Competitive Car' Amidst Initial Signs of Dissatisfaction
In Singapore, as the initial hints of dissatisfaction were expressed over the radio, Aston Martin ambassador Pedro de la Rosa reassured Fernando Alonso that his AMR23 is indeed a "competitively capable" car, and their challenging race was a result of unfortunate circumstances.
While this year's championship has seen a harmonious relationship develop between Alonso and his new Formula 1 team, Aston Martin, the atmosphere took a downturn in Singapore as the Spanish driver faced difficulties in breaking into the top ten. Frustration got the better of Alonso as he conveyed his sentiments to the team over the radio, exclaiming, "This car is impossible to drive!"
In Singapore, the initial indications of a disconnection or disconnect between Fernando Alonso and the team became apparent.
These were the initial signs of dissatisfaction in a season where the two-time World Champion had secured seven podium finishes and held the third position in the Drivers' Championship, marking him as the best of the rest. However, this changed following the Singapore Grand Prix.
Alonso, who finished 15th, the last among the classified runners and 90 seconds behind race winner Carlos Sainz, now trails Lewis Hamilton by 10 points in the standings.
De la Rosa has reassured his fellow Spaniard that there are better races and results still to come, despite the setbacks.
"We had higher expectations for this race, but unfortunately, we lacked pace, especially in Singapore. It was an unfortunate weekend for various reasons, and I don't want to make excuses," he stated on the F1 Nation podcast.
"We had a significant accident, and Lance [Stroll] is recovering, which made it a challenging time for the team. During the race itself, a series of events worked against us - getting into a battle with Checo [Perez], overheating the tires, and then the penalty, along with a poor pit stop.
"I don't believe we were far off in terms of competitiveness. If everything had gone according to plan, we would have finished with more points. However, this is motorsport, and you need flawless weekends to compete in the top six."
He further commented, "This is Formula 1, a demanding sport, and there will always be challenging weekends. What's crucial is to learn from these experiences and approach Suzuka with newfound knowledge and a positive outlook.
"We shouldn't forget that we've already achieved seven podium finishes, so our car is certainly more competitive than it appeared this week."
