One of the major topics of discussion in racing circles revolves around the potential increase in horsepower in NASCAR racecars.
While some current NASCAR drivers, like Denny Hamlin, are advocating for this change, Hall of Fame driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. expressed skepticism about whether horsepower adjustments would significantly impact races in a recent episode of "The Dale Jr. Download" podcast.
Earnhardt stated, "I appreciate Denny's candor, and I'm grateful for it... I'm not entirely convinced that simply adding horsepower will have a significant impact. However, given that Denny is behind the wheel, I value his insights on this matter. Moreover, if he suggests that the cost implications would remain relatively unchanged with a shift in horsepower, I am inclined to trust his assessment."
While Earnhardt may not see the value in altering horsepower, there is one aspect of NASCAR that he would eagerly support removing from the sport.
Earnhardt shared his viewpoint on the ongoing debate surrounding horsepower adjustments in NASCAR, acknowledging the significance of the topic. However, amidst these discussions, he voiced a strong preference for NASCAR to prioritize the removal of shifting from the sport. Earnhardt articulated his concerns about the detrimental effects of shifting, particularly during demanding races like the 500 laps at Martinsville. He highlighted how the need to shift distracts drivers from focusing on critical elements of racing, such as navigating corners effectively and planning strategic overtaking maneuvers. Earnhardt emphasized the impact of shifting on drivers' ability to fully engage in racecraft, urging NASCAR to persist in finding solutions to eliminate shifting from oval tracks.
Earnhardt, a two-time champion of the NASCAR Busch Series, has secured victory 26 times in the Cup Series, with two of those wins achieved at Daytona. Despite his successes, he has never claimed a Cup Series championship.
