This annual award, dedicated to honoring a distinguished F1 driver or team, commemorates the memory of the late champion Lorenzo Bandini, who tragically passed away three days after a fiery crash during the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix. To maintain fairness in acknowledging emerging talents in the sport, only one driver receives the award, and no recipient is eligible for a second nomination, according to information sourced from Wikiwand.
The award winner is presented with a ceramic replica of Bandini's Ferrari 312/67, featuring the iconic number '18.' Crafted by master ceramist Goffredo Gaeta, the replica is bestowed upon the recipient in Bandini's hometown of Brisighella in Emilia-Romagna.
A distinguished panel of 12 judges, consisting of motorsports journalists and former F1 team members, determines the annual winner based on their performances. Unlike race results and finishing positions, the decisive factors in the selection process revolve around the winner's character and approach to the sport.
Lorenzo Bandini: The Influence behind Lando Norris' Accolade
Following his father's wartime demise in 1944, Bandini and his family relocated to Reggiolo, where he enrolled in a vocational school after their hotels were destroyed in bombings. Concurrently, Bandini ventured into the motorsports realm, securing a job as a mechanic, marking the commencement of his affiliation with the industry. By 1950, Bandini had moved to Milan to work for Goliardo Freddi. In 1956, he made his racing debut at the Castell’Arquatto-Vernasca race, piloting Freddi’s 1100-103 bicolor and finishing fifteenth.
Bandini entered the Formula 1 circuit in 1961, making his debut in Belgium. A year later, he secured a seat with Ferrari, where he remained for the subsequent five years. Despite competing in an era dominated by Jim Clarke, Bandini garnered significant respect and admiration from his peers, although victories were scarce.
The 1967 Monaco Grand Prix appeared promising for Bandini until a tragic incident on Lap 82 altered the course. His Ferrari clipped a left-handed wooden barrier on a chicane, propelling him into a right-handed barrier. Without guardrails, the car hit a large mooring board, flipped on the track, and an instant fire erupted due to a severed fuel pipe. Bandini succumbed to his injuries three days later.
Throughout his Formula 1 career, Bandini secured only one Grand Prix victory—the 1962 Mediterranean GP. In 1963, he triumphed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and in his final year as a racing driver, he clinched victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona with Ferrari. Despite limited wins, Bandini remains a prominent figure in motorsports, attributed to his charismatic nature that earned him acclaim from both fans and colleagues.
