London Grand Finale of UCI Track Champions League Inspires Future Generations
As the 2023 UCI Track Champions League concluded at Lee Valley VeloPark last month, Warner Bros Discovery Sports Europe created a special moment by providing exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences for two prominent youth organizations.
A group of 10 students from the Global Academy participating in the Rise Up Academy program were invited to an exclusive backstage tour of the Lee Valley Velodrome. They had the opportunity to meet key members of the TV production team, gaining an inside view of the elite track racing series.
The Rise Up Academy, supported by Amazon Web Services (AWS), aims to assist primary and secondary school children in developing careers in broadcast technology. During the tour, students explored the broadcast facilities, the track center, and various setups such as camera arrangements, lighting rigs, big screen controls, and the TV graphics desk—all integral to broadcasting the track cycling series worldwide.
Kris Langbridge, Principal Customer Solutions Manager at AWS, expressed pride in supporting Rise's mission to introduce students to careers in the broadcast technology industry. Warner Bros Discovery Sports was acknowledged for providing this valuable learning experience for Global Academy students.
British Cycling also played a role in engaging young enthusiasts. Twenty pupils from East London's Bobby Moore School enjoyed an exclusive track session at Lee Valley Velodrome, meeting UCI Track Champions League stars before witnessing the racing action from tribune seats.
Ahead of the Grand Finale, 16 youth members from local British Cycling clubs received similar opportunities, including an exclusive track session guided by six-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy, an ambassador for the UCI Track Champions League. A Q&A session with Hoy allowed the children to inquire about his cycling journey and experiences as a world-class athlete.
The collaboration between Warner Bros Discovery Sports and the Rise Up Academy and City Academies initiatives underscores the significance of events like the UCI Track Champions League in introducing the younger generation to track cycling. Chris Ball, VP – Cycling Events at Warner Bros Discovery Sports Europe, emphasized the importance of breaking down barriers and inspiring young individuals through such experiences.
