KTM Establishes Deadline for Determining the Feasibility of Operating a Second Satellite Team
As the new year approaches, KTM faces an impending decision on the number of motorcycles they can field in 2025.
The manufacturer's efforts to enhance their presence on the grid have been unsuccessful thus far, and there won't be any changes in the upcoming year. However, the prospect of expansion in 2025 presents itself, and KTM recognizes the importance of being prepared for such an opportunity.
Motorsport director Pit Beirer shared insights with Speedweek, stating, "We want to make a final decision in the first three months of the new year as to whether we are even aiming for a third MotoGP team." Beirer expressed a positive inclination towards a third team, citing advantages such as increased track time, data comparison, and more opportunities for emerging talents. He emphasized the potential benefits of having six riders instead of four and the ability to retain talent within the KTM family.
Beirer outlined plans for discussions in 2025 with customer teams whose contracts with manufacturers are expiring, expressing a hypothetical scenario where they could secure a third MotoGP team. He envisions maintaining the current four riders and adding two more, considering it an ideal scenario.
However, securing a second satellite team alongside the existing Tech3 GASGAS squad presents challenges for KTM. Trackhouse Racing, VR46, Gresini Racing, and LCR Honda are mentioned with existing or potentially extended contracts with other manufacturers.
The eagerness of KTM to expand has led to the demotion of Pol Espargaro from a full-time racer to a test and reserve rider. Pedro Acosta's demand for a premier class seat and KTM's interest in retaining him under their umbrella resulted in Acosta securing a MotoGP bike. After careful consideration, it was decided that Espargaro would miss out on a spot, rather than Augusto Fernandez.
