Lewis Hamilton Advocates for the Return of the South African Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton has recently underscored his continuous endeavors to introduce Formula 1 to Africa, underscoring the sport's absence from the continent since 1993. Despite facing challenges, including the recent postponement of plans for the Kyalami circuit, Hamilton continues to passionately support the expansion of F1 into Africa.
Lewis Hamilton has actively been working towards the inclusion of a grand prix in Africa, contributing to the broader initiative to expand Formula 1's presence across more continents. This initiative aims to address the void left since the last South African Grand Prix in 1993. Hamilton's efforts align with the vision of F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, who shares a commitment to developing F1 in the African region.
However, the pursuit of an African Grand Prix has encountered challenges. Plans to host a race at the renovated Kyalami circuit in 2024 were recently delayed due to concerns about the feasibility of the contract terms. Despite this setback, Hamilton remains resolute in his commitment to bringing F1 to Africa, whether in South Africa or another suitable location.
Hamilton's advocacy extends beyond Africa, as he has also supported F1's expansion in the United States, particularly with the addition of the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Despite criticism from figures like Max Verstappen, Hamilton defends the event, emphasizing F1's growth as a business and the necessity to more effectively engage the American market.
In an interview with Motorsport Week, Hamilton expressed his perspective on the matter:
“I hear there’s a lot of people complaining about the direction that Stefano and Liberty have been going but I think they’ve been doing an amazing job.
“This sport is growing massively, it’s going to grow even more once we get this movie out. I’m on to Stefano because I really want to get the race in South Africa or in Africa, so if it’s not South Africa, it will be somewhere else there hopefully, because we’re on all the other continents.”
