Revealing Fresh Leadership at Mercedes F1 Team for the Japanese Grand Prix
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has unveiled the individuals who will stand in for him during his absence at the Japanese Grand Prix. Wolff will be absent from Suzuka as he undergoes a knee operation to address his anterior cruciate ligament, which he believes was injured in a cycling accident over the summer that resulted in a fractured shoulder, collarbone, elbow, and wrist.
To fill his role, the Mercedes team has appointed Bradley Lord, the Motorsport Communications Director, and Jerome D'Ambrosio, the Driver Development Director, as the duo who will act as substitutes for the Austrian.
Wolff shared this information during an interview with Sky Sports reporter Ted Kravitz in Ted's Notebook after the Singapore Grand Prix. He expressed his optimism about returning for the Qatar Grand Prix, adding humorously that his absence might even provide the team with a better chance to win.
Wolff discussed D'Ambrosio and Lord, stating that they will divide the responsibilities during his absence.
These remarks followed the Singapore Grand Prix, where Mercedes faced challenges and earned only 16 points, largely due to George Russell's crash on the final lap of the race, which elevated his teammate Lewis Hamilton to third place.
Russell had been aggressively pursuing Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris after Mercedes capitalized on a virtual safety car to switch both drivers to a fresh set of medium tires. Unfortunately, Russell's race ended abruptly when he clipped the wall at turn 10, causing him to crash into the barriers.
Nevertheless, Hamilton's strong performance, which included earning an additional point for the fastest lap, enabled him to surpass Fernando Alonso and secure third place in the drivers' championship. This marked Hamilton's return to the top three in the world championship standings for the first time since the first race of 2022.
Wolff expressed his satisfaction with Hamilton's podium finish and acknowledged Russell's efforts, highlighting the missed opportunity to earn more points due to the unfortunate turn of events.
