How McLaren Prevented a 'Tense' Situation Among Its Drivers

The team aimed to prevent a recurrence of the incident when its drivers collided during the race at Suzuka.

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella explained that the team aimed to avoid creating a "tense" situation with its strategy during the Japanese Grand Prix.

During the race, the team decided to switch the positions of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, who were following different tire strategies, to prevent losing time to George Russell, who was on a one-stop strategy.

Norris trailed Piastri for a few laps before the team instructed the Australian driver to yield to his teammate, ensuring their podium finish without concerns about potential threats from Mercedes or Ferrari.

This situation contrasted with their experience in Monza, where Norris faced delays behind Piastri and ultimately couldn't pass Alex Albon due to the superior straight-line speed of the Williams car.

The team had also faced scrutiny after the Hungarian GP when it appeared they provided Norris with a more favorable strategy by allowing him to utilize the undercut to overtake Piastri.

Stella: We wanted to observe if the pass could occur organically.

Stella: Japan was a much simpler situation compared to those instances. Those two prior situations were challenging, particularly the one in Monza. By "stressful," I mean that we inadvertently created tension between our two drivers that could have been avoided. We've reviewed those incidents, and while they may occur again in the future, when they are preventable, we should strive to prevent them.

In this particular case, our approach was to initially observe how quickly Lando was closing in on Oscar Piastri and see if a natural overtaking opportunity would arise. When we noticed that the pass wasn't happening organically, we decided to instruct the drivers to swap positions to avoid losing race time for both of them.

I would prefer to see drivers overtake each other naturally on the track, as I've mentioned before that I don't object to them racing each other. If overtaking occurs naturally, there's no need for instructions. So, our initial intention was to assess if that was possible. However, to be honest, there was only one lap between the "let's see if it happens naturally" phase and the instruction to swap positions. I believed this was the fairest course of action we could take.
