Fresh obstacles, uncharted opportunities. The world of MotoGP™ arrives on Indian soil!
Here it is—the stage is set for a thrilling showdown in the quest for the 2023 championship title. The exhilarating journey begins with a brand-new adventure: India. The Buddh International Circuit eagerly welcomes the world's most electrifying motorsport for the inaugural IndianOil Grand Prix of India, organized by Fairstreet Sports. The stakes are high, and the possibilities are endless.
The battle for the top spot
A new venue signifies a fresh start, especially after the dramatic crash in Barcelona that saw reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) bravely racing through pain on home turf at Misano. This incident has brought the title fight closer, with Bagnaia now holding a mere 36-point lead over Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing). Will the current #1 maintain supremacy on this unfamiliar track? Bagnaia's usual strategy involves gradual improvement, refining his speed and performance until he appears unbeatable. The race between Bagnaia and Martin to adapt quickly promises to be intriguing, especially since Martin is coming off a nearly flawless weekend.
Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) also faced challenges at Misano and will be eager to seize the opportunity presented by a new track. Similarly, Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), who has experienced his share of setbacks, sees the Buddh International Circuit as a prime chance for a comeback. KTM as a whole has shown promise, with some encouraging results during testing.
Data might work in Ducati's favor at the new track, given their eight bikes, albeit not all GP23 models. Johann Zarco (Prima Pramac Racing) seeks improvement in form, while Luca Marini (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) had a mixed weekend at Misano but topped the test afterward. Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) also experienced some setbacks, as did Fabio Di Giannantonio (Gresini Racing MotoGP™). On the flip side, Enea Bastianini won't be in action for the Ducati Lenovo Team, and Michele Pirro might step in. Can the Ducati squad make a strong start?
Speaking of data, Aprilia now boasts four bikes on the grid, which should provide them with more information. Misano witnessed a turnaround for Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing), who went from a double win to struggling for a top-ten finish. Maverick Viñales, his teammate, led the charge and lived up to his promise. While Aleix's championship climb took a hit, the bike's pace remains a positive.
The 2022 machine performed well in the hands of Miguel Oliveira (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP™ Team) and Raul Fernandez, showing promise for their team. Oliveira, in particular, has a recent history of winning at new venues, making him a formidable contender for adapting quickly to the track.
A fresh start
For Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), who recently became a father, a new track offers a chance for a reset after a challenging period. Pol Espargaro and Augusto Fernandez at GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3, both riding the RC16, also hope for improvement. A new venue could present rookies with opportunities to shine, as their competitors' experience will be limited to their machinery rather than the track.
Yamaha anticipates a fresh track to bring new opportunities. Despite Team Manager Massimo Meregalli's praise for their new engine at the Misano Test, Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) expressed a desire for more comprehensive improvements. Quartararo aims to narrow the gap to the front, and teammate Franco Morbidelli strives to maintain his perfect record of Sunday scoring.
Spotlight on Marquez
At Misano, all eyes were on Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team). Although he finished seventh in the Grand Prix race, his performance was commendable, bringing him closer to the winner than any other Honda rider. Speculation about Marquez's future continues to swirl.
Stefan Bradl, on wildcard and testing duties at Misano, was the next Honda rider, providing an incomplete benchmark. In the upcoming race, he will be with LCR Honda Castrol, replacing Alex Rins. Honda aims to gather more data, experience, and momentum in their journey back to the top. Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu) seeks to prove himself against Bradl. For Joan Mir, the goal remains the same: rebuilding after a challenging season marked by injury and consecutive DNFs. A new track presents an opportunity for a fresh start for everyone.
