Stunning Television Ratings Reflect Verstappen's Dominance in Formula 1

According to Liberty Media, Formula 1 is experiencing a prosperous period in the United States, as the sport's proprietors note a rise in television viewership for the 2023 campaign.

The current season has seen Formula 1 make two visits to North America, hosting races in Miami and Canada. Red Bull's supremacy has been the defining narrative of the year, with Max Verstappen asserting his dominance by securing victory in every grand prix thus far.

Greg Maffei, CEO of Liberty Media, conveyed to investors that the sport has witnessed notably robust expansion in the US during this season.

"According to him, viewership on ESPN for the current season is higher compared to the average viewership in 2022, and F1 TV has also shown strong performance.

The 2023 season has witnessed three out of the four largest live audiences for Formula 1 on US television, with notable turnouts for the Miami, Monaco, and Canadian Grand Prix races. Almost all of our races, except for two, have maintained an average viewership exceeding one million. These are impressive figures for the US market."

"Yet, it's not only the United States that has seen an uptick in viewership; ticket sales are also flourishing, drawing in hundreds of thousands of attendees for each race weekend."

The Prospects of Formula 1's Future in the United States

Liberty Media has been persistent in attributing a significant portion of these developments to a shift in format. The contentious introduction of sprint races in 2021, while eliciting mixed reactions from longstanding enthusiasts, is being touted by the sport's ownership as a catalyst for attracting audiences.

"We continue to witness sold-out events across nearly all races," they stated. "The sprint race weekends are propelling year-on-year growth in viewership. To illustrate, the overall viewership for the Spa event, encompassing the race, sprint shootout, and qualifying, surpassed last year's Belgian GP."

The upcoming schedule includes the standard return to Texas in October, but the penultimate race of the season will mark the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix, a highly anticipated event that has generated considerable excitement.

Adding to the anticipation, for the first time since 2015, American fans have a hometown favorite. Williams' driver Logan Sargeant made his debut earlier this year, and although he has yet to secure any points, his junior track record hints that he remains a compelling figure to monitor as his career evolves.
