Alphatauri Officially Announce That Lawson Will Participate In The Monza Race And Will Continue Until Ricciardo Is Prepared To Resume Racing
AlphaTauri has affirmed that Liam Lawson will remain as a substitute for Daniel Ricciardo until the Australian driver is deemed fit to resume racing. Ricciardo suffered a hand injury in a crash during the second practice session of the Dutch Grand Prix on Friday, leading to the impromptu inclusion of Red Bull junior driver Lawson.
Following his 20th-place qualification for the race, Lawson showcased his prowess in the Grand Prix itself. Despite the challenging conditions marked by wet weather, red flags, Safety Car restarts, and a penalty, Lawson adeptly navigated through what could be considered one of the most tumultuous races in recent history. His Formula 1 debut was far from straightforward, but he managed to secure a commendable 13th-place finish.
In the meantime, Ricciardo underwent surgery on his hand in Spain on Sunday. Sharing an image from his hospital bed on social media, Ricciardo remarked, "Had surgery this morning, got my first bit of metalwork so that’s cool. Big thanks to everyone who reached out and kept my spirits up. This ain't a setback, just all part of the comeback."
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner affirmed post the Zandvoort race that the accomplished eight-time race winner would be sidelined until at least after the upcoming Italian Grand Prix next week.
"He underwent surgery earlier today, during which screws and a plate were successfully implanted in his metacarpal," Horner reported. "The procedure went smoothly and was successful. It was a relatively uncomplicated surgery, so now the focus is on his recovery. In the case of an average person, recovery would take a couple of months, but for a Grand Prix driver, it's often a much shorter timeline."
Initially drafted for the Dutch Grand Prix exclusively, Lawson's involvement extended beyond that. On Monday afternoon, AlphaTauri made it official that Lawson would continue racing until Ricciardo was fully healed and prepared to resume driving.
"We are pleased that Daniel's surgery was successful and that he's on the path to recovery," the Italian team conveyed in a statement. "While we look forward to seeing him back on the track soon, until he is completely fit, we confirm that Liam, who performed admirably under challenging circumstances in Zandvoort, will remain partnered with Yuki, starting from our home race this weekend in Monza."
Lawson, aged 21, expressed his contentment at crossing the finish line during his debut on Sunday, given the race's tumultuous nature. Reflecting on his experience, he stated, "It was a hectic race with a lot happening. As I was heading to the grid and the rain started, it wasn't the best feeling, but the race itself went alright."
"I believe the latter part of the race was relatively better, especially when I had clean air and towards the end on the intermediate tires, it wasn't too bad. I'm just glad to have completed the race," he shared.
